Rehoboth Beach: The Nation's Summer Capital
Founded in 1872 by the Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Rehoboth Beach, DE today is a charming little beach town that bustles with modern attractions. Located on the Atlantic Coast just two hours from DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, Rehoboth Beach is aptly dubbed “The Nation’s Summer Capital” for its absolutely beautiful beaches, abundant outdoor recreation, and quaint boardwalk shops and restaurants. It’s not hard to see why this beautiful beachside town has been named a “Best Place to Retire”, or become a escape for big-city dwellers and retirees alike!

Why Do Residents Choose Rehoboth Beach?
How I Fell in Love with America's Beach Town
I first discovered Rehoboth Beach while I was living in Washington, D.C many years ago. It was the place to go for weekend getaways during the summer season, and I quickly fell in love with the charming little town and became a beach house member. On Friday afternoons, I’d make every effort to escape the Beltway traffic and make it over the Bay Bridge before the rush-hour crowds. When it was finally time to escape for good, I moved to Wilmington, DE, to be close to the beautiful beaches of Rehoboth. By then, the Summer Capital had become a year-round haven for vacationing and retiring Boomers. In 2003, Bill and I moved to Milton, DE, just 15 minutes from Rehoboth Beach.
Things to Do
Rehoboth has a beautiful beach, a mile-long boardwalk that is one of the best on the East Coast (according to Reader’s Digest), wonderful unique shops (and outlet stores!), galleries, and a lot of great restaurants. Some of the best events take place in the autumn, like my favorite Autumn Rehoboth Jazz Festival, but there’s something for everyone happening all year long.
Favorite events include the annual Chocolate Festival, the Lewes-Rehoboth Today Home Show, parades, sidewalk sales, a Sandcastle Contest, Fourth of July Fireworks on the beach, antique shows, the popular Sea Witch Festival, events at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand, and much more. Be sure to check our blog for updates on the Jazz Festival, the Film Festival and all the other year-round activities that make Delaware the choice for Boomers in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Amazing Outdoor Recreation
Rehoboth Beach is a great place for those who want to stay active. Ride your bike, walk Rehoboth’s Avenue, boardwalk, pretty tree lined neighborhoods, or the Junction and Breakwater Trail, and visit Dewey Beach just south of Rehoboth to enjoy water sports on Rehoboth Bay. There are also many active clubs and civic organizations in town, and you’ll find miles of beautiful hiking and biking trails at the nearby Cape Henlopen State Park.
Tons of Shopping & Dining
Life in Rehoboth Beach isn’t just about the fun outdoor stuff or the exciting downtown events—because you can’t forget about all the tax-free shopping! Rehoboth is home to the popular Tanger Outlets, where you can find discount prices at premium retail stores, and the Rehoboth Mall, along with a ton of other shopping and dining along Route 1.
