Explore Life in Beautiful Ocean View

The town of Ocean View, DE is located just one mile west of Bethany Beach and the Atlantic Ocean, and one mile south of the Indian River Bay at the mouth of Indian River. Legend tells that 19th century residents could see the ocean from the second floors of their homes, so the town became... Ocean View.

Today, Ocean View is a largely suburban town with plenty of amenities and many lovely communities. It's a short drive to the beach and surrounded by tons of outdoor recreation and boating. As locals might describe it as, "a friendly community comprised primarily of retirees" or "a place to come home to" with less than 2,000 year-round residents and a median age of 51 years.

Rich History Kept Alive

Back in the early days of Ocean View, many citizens lived as seamen working the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware Bay, or Chesapeak Bay, or as farmers and entrepreners. In 1923, Cecile Long Steele raised the area's first flock of broiler chickens, setting off the commercial broiler industry, which remains the states #1 agricultural enterprise. Though farming was the norm through the 1960s, it slowly gave way to retirement community development.
